Basics Done Well

I’ve been writing more off season strength programs for endurance athletes lately, and an exercise that often shows up in the first few weeks of any program (both for beginners and advanced lifters) is the goblet squat. While this exercise might seem very basic to some people, there is nothing wrong with starting here, especially when you are first starting out or returning to strength training after a busy summer.

The truth is, the basics work. Most of us would be better off doing the basics “savagely well” than attempting to replicate some overly complicated bosu squat or handstand circus act you saw someone doing on social media.

Learn to hinge, squat, push, pull, carry, brace, and rotate. Get really good at these basic movement patterns, and save the more “advanced” stuff for later after you have gotten all you can out of the more “basic” exercises.

Remember, you will get more out of a basic exercise done well than an advanced one done poorly.

BTW, if exercises like goblet squats seem too basic or easy to be effective, there is probably something off in your execution. That, or you need to grab a heavier dumbbell.

If you want help putting together a strength program that is safe, manageable, and effective, then send me a message. I’d love to help you work towards your goals and make 2025 your strongest year yet.
